Properly trained first-aid personnel are a necessity at most workplaces.
In fact, more businesses now require potential employees to complete first-aid courses before starting work, according to St John Ambulance Australia (NSW) first-aid trainer Ramona Moon.
The Wollongong-based trainer said groups of security guards had attended courses at the local office recently.
``The security industry is one of the many which require their employees to have first-aid certificates," she said.
Chris Dorahy, also a first-aid trainer, believes it is imperative that employees and customers are presented with a safe working environment which complies with WorkCover regulations.
He said St John offered accredited courses which complied with the Occupational Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulation 1989.
``The senior first-aid course is one of the many we offer and covers basic treatments for resuscitation, bleeding, fractures, burns, poisons, bites and stings, and protection against communicable diseases," Mr Dorahy said.
``One of the most relevant perhaps is our occupational first-aid course which is designed for those in charge of first-aid rooms within their place of work, as required by WorkCover."
The course, which covers toxic hazards, documentation, oxygen therapy and transportation, takes place in Wollongong from September 25-29.
